Count Dracula (ドラキュラ, Dorakyura) is the titular antagonist of the novel Dracula, published in 1897.

Personality & Traits[]

Like many modern-day yanderes, count Dracula is very talented and smart but has only eyes for one victim at the time. Van Helsing elaborates on this later on, calling him a magnificent man who could conquer the world if he wished to do so. Dracula is capable of being very polite and even shows an affinity towards those he's trapping, though interestingly enough he does not seem to care about his female victims at all.

When showing his true colours, however, he starts to embody the true spirit of a yandere. Cruel, determined and ready to kill if it means keeping the object of his affection safe. As shown by his fight against Renfield, Dracula is even willing to kill his current lover if they decide to rebel against him.

He genuinely loves his victims and does not kill them if they comply with his wishes. Jonathan Harker is the most notable example, being terrified of the count while also accepting that his love towards him is what is keeping him alive.

It is important to note that the novel implies that his yandereness likely came into existence due to the effects of vampirism, with Lucy gaining similar yandere traits when she gets turned into a vampire.

History[]

Not much is known about the count's backstory, allowing for much speculation. He may or may not have been a Wallachian prince, despite living in Transylvania.

Yandere Powers[]

As a yandere and a vampire, Dracula possesses multiple skills that allow him to "protect" his loved ones.

  • Shapeshifting: Being able to transform himself into a bat, wolf or even mist. Alternatively, he can shrink himself.
  • Psychic Powers: Being able to create a psychic link with his victims and control the behaviour of various animals. While he cannot control the mind of humans, he can shut down their body and use their thoughts to gather information.
  • Charisma: Like many other yandere characters, Dracula relies heavily on his deredere side to make other people trust him. It is said that his charms are irresistible to men specifically.
  • Intelligence: Again, his intellect is crucial for his yandere plans.

Relationships[]

While it is unknown with how many people he had relationships with, it is safe to assume that among them were Jonathan Harker and R.M. Renfield, two men who the count was very fond of. Especially in the case of Renfield, who mentions having been embraced and loved by the count. Their relationship comes to an abrupt halt when Renfield decides to betray him.

Jonathan himself shows that his encounter with Dracula changed him greatly, becoming a yandere for his wife Mina as well. This has often been interpreted as a cruel irony, showing that anyone is capable of turning into a yandere if they are put through enough suffering and despair. Dracula laments this, being genuinely in love with him and unwilling to kill Jonathan (preferring to kill his friends instead if it means that the two of them can stay together forever).

Trivia[]

  • In the manuscript of the original novel, it is revealed that a scene where Dracula makes out with van Helsing has been removed. This was likely censored by the writer himself, given how novels with homoerotic relationships were considered taboo at the time.
  • Originally, Dracula was going to be named Whampir.
  • Sakae Esuno, the author of Mirai Nikki, has stated in a 2007 interview with Shonen Jump that the relationship between Yuki Amano and Yuno Gasai have been influenced by the novel.
