"As anticipated. Unanticipated. You. Target lock...completed. Commencing...experiment. You. Forever. Aha... ♪ - Courtney after her first loss to the player
Courtney (Japanese: カガリ Kagari) is a character in the Gen 3 Pokémon games and their remakes. However, this page focuses specifically on Courtney's remake incarnation, as she is the one with yandere traits.
Background[]
"Courtney is a former scientist. She is known to have a brilliant mind, and she adores Maxie. She does not speak often, and shows little interest in much of what goes on around her—or even her own situation. Her personality is such that once her interest in someone or something is awakened, she will pursue it tirelessly. As you stand in Team Magma's way time and again, she begins to take an interest in you..." - Official description of Courtney's remake self
Courtney's character was revamped in Gen 6, changing her design as well as personality. While original Courtney was a fairly average female villain, ORAS Courtney behaves in an unhinged manner more akin to a defective robot than a human girl, couple with even more odd behavior such as occasionally making slurping noises and humming. As described above, Courtney is apathetic toward most things aside from what she currently deems "interesting", which becomes the player character once she loses to them, to the point where eventually she will admit to losing sight of Team Magma's goal because all she wants is to "analyze" the player.
Courtney also has a similar, albeit more genuine-seeming, affection for her leader, Maxie. She seems to suffer a psychotic breakdown after he is defeated, ranting at the player for "breaking" him and wanting to destroy the world, apparently having lost all hope due to Maxie giving up on Team Magma. During this time, Courtney treats the player with unrelenting rage, as opposed to the fascination she showed before. However, once she and Maxie reconcile, Courtney recovers somewhat and shows cordiality to the player once again, albeit no longer tinged with her former obsession with them.
In all, Courtney is characterized as someone who is severely mentally ill and emotionally dependent on Maxie and Team Magma. Her adoration for him and outrage over his loss is the only thing that seems to break her fixation toward the player, making Courtney an unique Yandere in the sense that she has an unhealthy obsession with two people rather than one. Courtney also makes an appearance in the spinoff gacha game, Pokémon Masters, this time transferring her obsessive behavior toward the player character of that game, and in the animation series, Pokémon Generations, where her characterization from the remakes is retained.
Trivia[]
- Courtney's behavior, Yandere-isms aside, has led some fans to speculate that she is indeed a robot, or possibly on the autism spectrum. Her attitude toward the player (an intense, manic desire to "analyze" them) could be construed as a special interest, rather than anything romantic.
