Satella, also known as the Witch of Envy, Queen of the Castle of Shadows, the Jealous Witch, and simply as the Witch, is the enigmatic main antagonist of the dark fantasy light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World. She is a yandere towards Subaru Natsuki.
Background[]
Satella, a silver-haired half-elf, was the one responsible for the Great Calamity that took place 400 years before Subaru's arrival, the events of the story. At some point, she absorbed the Envy Witch Factor, which bestowed the Authority of Envy upon her. However, the half-elf wasn't compatible with the Factor, leading to the creation of a split personality dubbed the Witch of Envy. The Witch of Envy possessed a burning sense of jealousy and was nearly impossible to reason with.
Yandere Traits[]
Four hundred years past by and for unknown reasons, both of Satella's personalities fell in love with a young man from another world called Subaru Natsuki. Regardless of the origins of her feelings, one or both of Satella's personalities used their power to transport Subaru from his world to the Dragonfriend Kingdom of Lugunica. Since Subaru's arrival, Satella bestowed her scent onto him (hence, the Witch's scent) and granted Subaru the ability to "Return by Death", to prevent him from dying permanently and to get him to eventually kill her one day.
She was very possessive over Subaru, as she prohibited him from telling anyone else the secret of "Return by Death." If Subaru attempts to reveal this ability to others, his heart will either be grasped by Satella's Unseen Hand, or she'd kill the person he was about to reveal his power to, like when she didn't hesitate to kill Emillia a second after he revealed his ability. As a result of the prohibition however, Subaru's sanity has been greatly damaged after multiple deaths.
They finally met face to face when Satella entered the sanctuary, as she slowly spproached him and spoke her three special words reserved only for him—"I love you." With Subaru immobilized, she comes closer to him, continuously chanted her love to him and embraced him while looking for information inside Subaru's head to see who he loved, just so she'd kill them to keep Subaru's affections exclusively to herself.
